Virtual meetings: How to make an impression
In the movie Blade Runner, in a futuristic Los Angeles, the main character Rick Deckard called a suspect through video conferencing. I remember it clearly thinking how awesome it must be to call someone visually rather than by phone. After all, the movie was made in 1982.
In the post-pandemic 21st century, video conferencing is ubiquitous and common. How you present yourself is even more important now than in 1982. As with in-person meetings, visual presentation is key to a good conference.
Take these tips.
Lighting — Light from the front makes you look clear and confident; light from behind makes you a silhouette.
Camera angle - Put the camera at eye level. Too low = unflattering and makes you look disengaged. Too high = distant. Eye-level feels natural.
Framing - Aim for your head and upper shoulders in the frame. Too close feels intense; too far feels detached.
Background - Keep it simple and tidy. A neutral wall, bookshelf, or plant works. Avoid clutter or anything distracting.
